Are you children going back to school soon? You can use your annual shopping trip as an opportunity to get your kids reading, writing and excited about what they’ll be learning this year at school, preschool or daycare. Here are some tips to help build literacy skills while you tackle that shopping list! Master the List If you already have a list from the school, have your kid read through it, or read through the list with him. Help him with anything he's unsure of, sounding out any new words or sounds. Talk about what’s on the list. What will the different items be used for? Where should you go to find the things you need? Are any essentials missing? If your child does not have a list, make one of your own! Talk with him about what he might need for the upcoming school year. A lunchbox? New pencils or paper? A notebook? What else should go on the list? Have him write the items down, or work with him to record the list. Empower Your Child Use shopping time to get your child excited about school. Work with her to select tools that will get her reading and writing. Specially selected school supplies can help build your kid’s enthusiasm for the new school year. If your child is reading, have her be the keeper of the list. Ask her to check off the items as you find them. If your child is not yet reading, work with her as you shop. She can find the words on the list by looking for the letters that start the names of the items you’ve found. Happy Shopping! iVillage + PBS KIDS |
