iVillage | PBS Summer reading Challenge

Super Job, Super Readers!

Super WHYWow!  We can’t believe that six weeks have already passed.
Nearly 20,000 of you took our Summer Reading Community Challenge! Your enthusiasm and excitement are inspiring. Plus, you gave us some great tips along the way.

As a special thanks, here’s a certificate you can download and use to reward your little ones for their summer reading accomplishments.

Each Thursday through the end of August, we’ll be sharing the great resources and tips we heard from all of you. Let’s keep our kids reading right through to next summer’s Challenge!

Happy Reading,
iVillage + PBS KIDS

Engaging All Your Readers

It’s nKids Readingot always easy to find ways to inspire all the kids in your house to read. This summer one of you asked our coach, Angela Santomero, for her advice on how to choose books that would engage both younger and older readers. Here’s her advice.

You can read to multiple kids at the same time, if you keep the needs of all the kids in your audience in mind:

  • Empower all of the kids by having them each choose a book to “read” to the family. This way, younger kids can “read” the story from a picture book they know well, and advanced readers can read from a favorite book that they want to share with a younger sibling.

  • Appeal to multiple ages by choosing classic books that have strong illustrations for family reading. The illustrations will help keep younger children engaged, while older kids can enjoy the more advanced stories. You can choose books that are also movies, like The Wizard of Oz or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and compare the book to the movie.
