Mother’s Day is on Sunday, and there’s no doubt your kids are gearing up to show you some much-deserved love with the perfect gift. And since they’re already focused on you, it’s the perfect time to create a family tree. Plus, researching the branches of your family tree is an excellent way for the kids to hone their research, writing and language skills. The idea of extended family can be a complicated concept for preschoolers, so limit your tree to the people your youngsters know well. Ask them to name everyone in your family: You, Daddy, his brothers and sisters, grandparents, aunts and uncles. Go through photo albums together and collect pictures of each family member. Then help your kids draw a tree and glue the photos to it. If you have an elementary school-aged kid, have her really dive deep into her roots. Sit down together and build a family tree, with your kid at the center. See how many branches of your family she can list on her own. Once she has traced as far back as she can (with your help, of course!), encourage her to call her grandparents and other older relatives for more information. Then have her write out a story based on the conversations and encourage her to share at your next family gathering! |
