A Cool Way to Beat the Heat AND Build Reading Skills

Escape into a Movie
| |

3-d MovieIf you need a break from the summer sun, going inside to watch a movie is a fun – and cool – option. Get your child in on the act, and you can actually help improve both reading and writing skills. Here are some tips to help you tap your child’s inner movie buff.

To prepare for a trip to the theater, look through the newspaper or online movie guide with your kid. Show her how the movies are listed and where to find reviews. If she can read, ask her to read a few reviews and suggest a movie she'd like to see.

If you’re going to rent or buy a film to watch at home, have your child read the film synopses and any available reviews. Talk to her about what she might want to look for. Does the movie look like it will be funny? Happy? Sad? Is it for kids? Adults? Is it animated?

After the movie, ask your kid to write a review.  Encourage her to share feelings about the film. Did she like it? Was it scary? Did it make her laugh? Which characters did she like? Have your kid include a summary of her favorite part of the movie: Who was in the scene? What happened? Why was that part her favorite?

If your child is not writing yet, talk to her about the movie and discuss what she liked about it. Have her draw a picture of her favorite part of the movie.

Happy Viewing!
