Turn Your Zoo Trip Into a Reading Adventure

iVillage | PBS Summer reading Challenge

Hi there, glad to see you’re back with us this week! If you’ve just signed up, welcome! Our Challenge starts next week! Be sure to log on to our Challenge community then to meet Angela and chat about assignments, swap ideas and get your questions answered. In the meantime, here are some great ideas to incorporate reading into your next trip to the zoo.
Monkey-ing Around
zooDid you know that June is National Zoo and Aquarium month? It’s a great time to get outdoors, visit some furry friends and help your kids practice the words and letters they learned this year.

The zoo is a perfect place for preschoolers. Not only are the animals fascinating and funny, but their names on zoo signage are great for letter identification. Ask your kid what her favorite animals are and plan to stop at those exhibits. While you’re there, you can talk about the animals and what they are doing.

For older kids, turn your trip into a scavenger hunt. Before you go, spend some time together thinking of categories to search for and use these to create the scavenger hunt list. Try to find things like an animal from each continent, nocturnal animals, animals that live in trees or water, or animals with fur or feathers. Then while you’re there, write down the names of the animals that fit into each category you’ve created. Did you find anything surprising?

Catch more animal adventures next week during Curious George’s “Country Monkey” week on PBS KIDS (check local listings) with special special literacy activities at pbsparents.org/read. Or visit PBSKIDS.org/curiousgeorge.
