Want a slimmer physique without giving up alcohol? Stick with wine over beer or mixed drinks. Why? A recent Dutch study found that women who drank one or more glasses of beer or spirit-containing drinks a day were most likely to have a wide waist—whereas wine drinkers were most likely to have a whittled middle and a healthy waist-to-hip ratio. Researchers are still exploring the connection, but they speculate that the potent antioxidants in wine may have something to do with it. But don’t forget to factor in the calories and keep it in moderation. “Alcohol contains excess calories, and because your body processes it before anything else, it also slows the rate at which fat is burned,” says Diane Hendericks, a registered dietitian in Oakhurst, N.J. |
