Hi everyone, Mother's Day makes me feel so lucky. Lucky that I met an amazing man whose children are now also mine. Blessed to have a wonderful mother who is still with me as my role model and wing(wo)man in everything from shopping to eye-rolling. Luckiest that I was able to have a son of my own 15 years ago -- and to survive that experience in good health and pretty good humor. Not everyone is so lucky. Just ask Christy Turlington Burns. Yes, that Christy Turlington -- who shared with mother and Steamy Kitchen Blogger Jaden Hair why she filmed the incredible documentary, No Woman, No Cry, airing tonight at 9:30 p.m./8:30 p.m. Central and tomorrow afternoon on OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network: "After delivering my daughter Grace seven and a half years ago, in 2003, I began to hemorrhage...I was completely unprepared for a complication after delivery...I learned that the same complication I had endured was the leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide. I learned that hundreds of thousands of women die each year in pregnancy and childbirth, but that 90% of these deaths are preventable. I don't know that I made the decision then to focus all of my energy on this subject, but it was certainly the beginning..." You can read all of Jaden's exclusive interview of Christy for BlogHer here. But more importantly, I urge you to go to your couch and beg, borrow or take time to watch or record No Woman, No Cry. When you visit EveryMotherCounts.org and see how she and her team have made it so easy to for all of us to do just a few little things to help mothers out world-wide, you'll realize that Turlington may have just been hiding her most beautiful light under a bushel until now. And mama, that's saying something. A huge hug to all the moms, mamas, mamis, mamacitas, mas, stepmoms, moms-in-everything-but-the-name and muthas (you know who you are). Enjoy! How to watch: Tune in tonight at 9:30 p.m./8:30 p.m. Central and again on tomorrow, May 8th at 1pm ET/PT on OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network | |
