3 Ideas to Make Reading Fun for Everyone

Encouraging Every Child to Read
| |

family cookingThis summer, some of you wrote in to ask for tips that will help you encourage every reader, including new readers who are a little reluctant, kids with special needs and older kids who need new challenges or age-appropriate content.

Here are a few tips from our coach Angela and other Challenge participants that will inspire everyone in your house to get reading:

  • Take a break from books and introduce word-based play. Not every kid is ready to pick up a book, and sometimes it’s nice to change up the routine. You can build reading and language skills in reluctant readers by playing Mad Libs® style games and board or card games that require reading or language play, such as charades and Apples-to-Apples, Jr.®

  • Look to your child’s interests for inspiration. Reading is everywhere, and your child’s hobbies can be a gateway to reading activities. Sports box scores, trading cards and articles are fun to read; craft instructions provide reading challenges; and recipes provide an opportunity for aspiring chefs to flex their reading skills (with adult supervision, of course!).

  • Use books as a launch pad for fun!  If reading traditional books isn’t clicking for your child, you should consider some fun alternatives. One of our Challenge participants suggested getting into the story by acting out some favorite books. Using silly voices, props and assigning a part (or even two) to your child can make reading twice the fun.

Happy Reading,
