Convenience Store Diet Picks

gas stationDon’t let a summer road trip lead to diet disaster.

“Gas stations are teeming with high-fat, high-calorie options. Think donuts, chips, prepackaged submarine sandwiches and candy bars,” says Erin Palinski, a registered dietitian and founder of the Vernon Nutrition Center in Vernon, N.J. “The beverages are just as bad: The sodas, sports drinks and lemonades you’ll find in the coolers are loaded with calories. If you get a fountain drink, the smallest size is often 20 ounces—that’s typically 240 calories from one drink.”

Instead, Palinski advises, pack a cooler to take along in the car, or reach for fresh fruit, dry-roasted nuts or a low-fat yogurt.
